On Saturday, I did a 54 minute radio interview with Dr. Bob Rose on his “Rewiring Your Brain” show on BlogTalkRadio. The full show is available to be listened to here. It was a blast! Bob is a greater interviewer with a wide range of interests. The main theme was how the values shifts I talk about in ConsumerShift are rewiring our brain in terms of how emerging values are leading u us to rethink our lifestyles.
We talked about the theme of “anti-consumerism” and the search for meaning that goes beyond material goods acquisition and the emerging emphasis on experiences, relationships, community, and self-expression. We also discussed the role of technology in presenting the opportunity-or challenge-of human performance enhancement. Will we choose to augment our natural human capabilities with new technologies that emerging–from stem cell organ replacement to brain implants? My view is that the research suggests that many of the ConsumerShifters (if you’ll allow that word) will be fascinated with this potential and will eagerly embrace it. But alongside the enthusiasts, a strong “natural” movement exists that will be resistant. The bulk of us will be in between, making decisions on a case-by-case basis. The ConsumerShift research suggests that the Postmodern and Integrals bring a practical mindset to technology: if it’s helpful, great, but they are not interested in technology for technology’s sake.
We covered a lot of ground in just under an hour. And Rewiring Your Brain has lots of good topics that y’all may find of interest! Andy Hines
